Before learning to tune a guitar by ear, whether by frets or harmonics, you need to spend a lot of time developing your musical ear. For those who can’t yet tune by ear, there are other tuning methods.
Tuning with a guitar tuner (a simple method for beginners).
This method requires purchasing a guitar tuner.
This is a gadget that attaches to the headstock of the guitar and responds to the sound of the strings.
Turn on the tuner, strike an open string, and observe what it displays. The tuner’s screen usually displays prompts indicating how much and where to bend the string. The display typically shows large letters corresponding to the notes. Let’s say we need to tune a guitar to standard tuning. We need to tune it from the thinnest string to the thickest as follows:
String 1 – E
String 2 – B
String 3 – G
String 4 – D
String 5 – A
String 6 – E
If any deviations from the specified parameters occur, tighten or loosen the tuning pegs on the headstock of the desired string.
This tool can be used to tune not only a guitar, but also an electric guitar or bass guitar.
Tuning with a software tuner.
These tuners can be downloaded separately, or you can use the built-in tuner in any music program.
The idea is that when you strike an open string, the tuner displays a scale that indicates possible deviations from the desired note. The most correct position is in the middle. It differs from a guitar tuner in that the letter designation may be omitted. Some tuners use color indicators.
DON’T FORGET!
Be sure to check your guitar’s tuning before playing!
