The absence of verbal stress on the brain allows you to turn on your imagination to its full potential. No words means no other people’s thoughts.
By listening to instrumental music of different genres, you can focus on working through some of the states. Classical music, reggae, blues, etc. will provide relaxation; rock ‘n’ roll, jazz, etc. will promote concentration.
I highly recommend creating something like a playlist. It’s important to arrange the compositions so that there’s a subtle transition from one state to another.
For example, from a state of complete relaxation to complete concentration and vice versa. Add several tracks to the playlist that will gradually relax or invigorate you.
My list is as follows.
5 — Steve Vai – Boston Rain Melody (8:53)
4 — John Petrucci – Glasgow Kiss (7:48)
3 — Sergey Golovin – Sense of Reality (4:52)
2 — Widek – Orion (3:50)
1 — Plipi – Away (3:43)
When I need to focus, I listen to music in reverse order; when I need to relax, I listen to it forward.
1 — Plipi – Away (3:43)
2 — Widek – Orion (3:50)
3 — Sergey Golovin – Sense of Reality (4:52)
4 — John Petrucci – Glasgow Kiss (7:48)
5 — Steve Vai – Boston Rain Melody (8:53)
This kind of therapy will help you relax during your breaks and focus at the start of the workday.
The length of the piece is also an important factor. Longer compositions promote complete relaxation. Short and sharp tunes get you fired up. It doesn’t matter whether you’re listening to a 90-second etude or a 14-minute rock ballad. It all depends on the duration.
If you need to relax, listen from short to long tracks. If you need to perk up, move from long to short ones.
Here are some examples of composers of music without lyrics:
Yann Tiersen
God is an Astronaut
Mogwai
65 Days of Static
Hans Zimmer
nobody.one
Joe Satriani
Guthrie Govan
Veli of Maya
Steve Vai

Sean Hall
Animals as Leaders
Sergey Golovin
Wide Eyes
Lee McKinney

…
as well as composers of box-office films, classical composers, and many others.
You need a total playback time for the entire playlist – up to half an hour, no more.
I wish you airy relaxation and rock-solid concentration!
