In this post, I want to tell you and motivate you to never stop developing. You need to constantly learn new things and seize every opportunity to gain information.
But don’t just study for the sake of it. It’s imperative to immediately put the knowledge you gain into practice. For musicians, this could mean learning an old-style part, practicing techniques from new genres, or playing instruments in a completely different style. As soon as you learn something new, immediately apply it to your playing.
Few people know that the development of each musician in a group should be overseen by one person—a coach. It’s permissible for one coach to assume responsibility for the musical growth of the entire group.
Leaving musicians to their own devices is a grave mistake. It’s safe to say that more than half the group will not develop.
It’s a completely different matter with a personal mentor.
We admire the superb performance skills of musicians from famous world-renowned bands and consider them the best of the best. But many have no idea how many experienced mentors those musicians had and still have. How many people were involved in the development of these “stars.”
A self-respecting artist will seek out coaches for external motivation and accelerated growth.
For example, to improve their playing in a particular technique, people specifically seek out masters. Musicians choose highly specialized specialists. It’s better to spend money and time on training and then “take off” than to waste talent and never achieve anything.
This applies to the personal musical effectiveness of one. But for the growth of all musicians to be focused, a so-called “boss” is necessary. This can be called by various names: head coach, chief, producer, or manager. This person is responsible for the growth of not only the musicians but also all project participants. They focus on both the overall level of their playing and on musical matters. Without them, the development of the entire team is impossible.
If you don’t have such a person, then make sure you get one as soon as possible. The sooner a group finds a manager, the faster it will begin to grow.
Two keys to success: individual development and high-quality overall growth.
