How to develop musical ear?

As we know, in its simplest form, a song is performed by several musical instruments. Each instrument playing within a group is called a part. Another term for a part is a voice.

In musical compositions, these voices are divided into low, mid, and high.

An untrained ear primarily hears high voices (vocals, melody, theme, solo). Better trained musicians also distinguish low sounds (bass, keys, drums) along with high ones. Those with excellent musical pitch clearly hear the entire texture. If you can single out one part with your ear and lead it, then you possess a composer’s ear.

A composer’s ear can single out one or more musical instruments, hear duets, trios, quartets, etc. separately, and can also compare different melodies in rhythmic relationships and much more that is difficult for the average listener to understand.

This sense can only be developed through practice and an experienced mentor. This skill is often in demand among beginning composers and DJs.

But if you’re serious about it, follow these steps:

First, listen to a two-part piece. The instrument can be a guitar, piano, violin, etc. Determine by ear the top (high sounds) and the bottom. It’s best, of course, to choose a piece with a “English horn” effect (when only one voice begins, followed by a second, a third, etc.).
Choose one voice and lead it.
Follow the alternation of notes in the first voice, without straying into the second. Observe how it rises (sounds higher) and how it descends (leaves into low tones).
Listen this way several times until you’re completely focused on the sound.
Then, switch parts and listen to the piece again, repeating the above.
This is more than enough for a start.

After a few listens, you’ll hear both sounds together.

Your hearing will change and become different. Now you’ll never be able to listen to music the same way again. You’ll hear each track simultaneously in both the top and bottom sections. Believe me, you will want to listen to your past favorite hits in a new way.

You’ll reach a new level and listen like this forever.
