Time-tested rules for a musician.

To make things clearer, let’s give a simple everyday example for easier understanding.

It’s well known that to keep men’s hair on their heads as long as possible (and in some cases, even restore it), they need to follow simple rules:

  • wear a hat in any weather
  • wash your hair with lukewarm water
  • don’t use a hair dryer after washing
  • choose the right hairbrush
    etc.

But we all notice that absolutely all these rules are broken or forgotten. Because of this, men start going bald, blaming nature, heredity, or a lack of vitamins, but never themselves.

Also, everyone knows that in any endeavor, there are rules that must be followed. Failure to comply with established principles may result in serious consequences.

I’ve compiled a few rules to follow when studying music:

  • learn to sing with a teacher
  • write music, drawing on the experience of great musicians
  • play the guitar without harming your health
  • work hard during rehearsals, fulfilling clearly defined tasks
  • perform only when prepared
  • do not drink alcohol during a performance
  • quit smoking and avoid large quantities of chocolate for vocalists
  • tune your instrument every time before playing, thereby respecting the audience (and not assuming they’re ignorant, as if no one will understand anything; remember, everyone has an ear for music)
  • take care of your health when playing any musical instrument (don’t overexert yourself during practice, keep track of time)
  • don’t play, sing, or compose through force, fatigue, bad mood, high fever, or for trivial paid requests (peace of mind is more important)
  • be sure to calculate how much effort, time, and possibly money you’re expending selects every piece of music
  • Never play with people you don’t find interesting
  • Keep ALL your works (just in case)
  • Always work towards results, have a goal.

Of course, this is not a complete list.

There’s a separate, huge list for every instrument, every performance, every vocal, every composer.

Those rules weren’t created by chance—someone has already broken them and been punished with damage to their health, money, creativity, loneliness, and even death.

I wish you to follow the established rules and not to neglect them under any circumstances.
